Kindle for iPhone has been released!

Not long after Amazon announced that they would be making the Whispernet (Amazon’s wireless eBook store and delivery platform) available for mobile phones, Amazon today released Kindle for iPhone. While not as feature rich as the actual Kindle and Kindle 2 hardware devices, Kindle for iPhone is Amazon’s competitive response to Stanza, a leading free iPhone application for reading eBooks.

Apple approves Amazon's submission of Kindle for iPhone!

What differentiates Kindle for iPhone from other eBook readers for mobile phones such as the iPhone, is that it links to the Amazon Kindle Store and your Amazon account. Any purchases you make are instantly available to you for reading on the Kindle, Kindle 2, and iPhone simultaneously. If you spend 3 hours reading The Tipping Point on your Kindle 2 at home, and then go to work on the bus, you can pull out your iPhone and continue reading where you left off reading The Tipping Point. This is possible because Amazon synchronizes your eBooks, annotations and highlights, and current position between all of your Whispernet capable devices.

Although the full Kindle Store is not available from Kindle for iPhone, you can purchase books via the web using Mobile Safari if you wish to. I imagine that Amazon intentionally released this primitive version to get their presence established immediately following the successful launch of the Kindle 2, and the application will only improve with time.

Does any of this change your view on the recent Kindle 2 release? Please share your thoughts as a comment to this post.
